 Affordable health insurance california

Searching for affordable family health insurance can be a long drawn out affair. Most agents normally represent a few of their most popular companies and market their products. Where that of course falls short is in truly getting a fair shake at finding the best buy for the money you're going to spend. Affordable family health care insurance requires some serious getting after on your part.

  • Where can I get health insurance for my daughter?   She is 3 1/2 years old and she has had hypothyroidism since birth. She has been denied by IHC Select Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield through individual plans. And we no longer qualify for Medicaid or CHIP because our income level is too high. So unless my husband has benefits through work where they can't deny her (which he doesn't have at the time), we have been unable able to find insurance for her. Does any one have a solution?
    • Call a social worker at FIA, just because you dont qualify for medicade by income does not mean you won't for her condiotion.
    • Apply for ssi disability benefits, she should qualify for medicaid through them.
  • Is there a good PPO health insurance provider that is known to be...   After examining the usual suspects (Nationwide, HealthNet, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Pacificare) I find that the plans are almost identical. PPOs with 00/5000 deductable or out of pocket maximum, 100% coinsurance etc for example, cost almost the same from each provider. What about WallMart, Costco, Kaiser ??? is there something I should know?
    • A lot will depend on where you live, but in general, at least in California, you will want to look at which carrier is used by the largest number of doctors in your area. Blue Cross tends to be accepted by most doctors in California. A PPO is only as good as the doctors who accept it, so a cheaper one is not necessarily a good deal. You might find cheaper plans, but if no doctors accept it, it's worthless. The other plans you mentioned are good too. Find out what your personal doctor and the hospital near you use, and if everything else is equal, you know which plan to go with. Wishing you good health, Kim, a former life/health ins. agent
  • I have an apparent problem trying to do a HSA transfer/rollover!?   I was self employed for 15 years. When Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs) came out in 1997, I signed up right away with my insurer, Time (now Assurant Health). Then MSAs became Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) a few years ago and my HSA grew to an over ,000 balance. I took a new job a year ago with a fantastic Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois plan that is not a HDHP. The problem is is that my HSA with ,000 is earning 3% at Assurant. I'd like to transfer it over to another HSA that offers brokerage services, but I can't seem to transfer it anywhere since they always ask, "Are you covered by any other Health Plan, in addition to your HDHP, which provides any of the same benefits as the HDHP?" If so, they won't open an account for me! Whatever HSA admin I call, the low level people always say, "Sorry, can't do it!" It seems wacky that I'm locked into keeping my account where it is at. Is this true?
    • I believe that is correct. You can still take withdraws for medical expenses.
