A lot of the things we take for granted would be considered a blessing by someone in less fortunate circumstances. Take our health care system, for example. It is only a dream for millions of other people in the world, yet it's something we take for granted. And what about social justice? President Bush opposes a living wage; meaning, hard working Americans should toil away to live in poverty. Meanwhile, the underemployed are deprived healthcare. The United States is the only nation in the G-8 without national medical care. If you have money, the U.S. does offer the best healthcare in the world. The problem is that millions are without that money or insurance. Is there anything more un-Christian than denying the sick healthcare, or forcing the working poor into bankruptcy to receive proper healthcare. According to Congressman Pete Stark, “Our lack of a guaranteed health care safety net indirectly plunges millions into bankruptcy and financial ruin who, once sick, cannot afford to pay for their high medical treatment costs out-of-pocket.” So how do the different plans effect how you receive health care? When you are part of an indemnity plan, you are typically able to choose the doctor you want to see when an unexpected illness occurs. You will have to fill out paperwork to submit claims, and keep track of your receipts and medical bills. If you are covered under the managed care health insurance plans, you have a higher chance of having your routine check ups covered, since they believe strongly in preventative medicine. You typically are required to choose a health care provider from a list of participating providers, but most of the paperwork required to process your claim is the responsibility of the insurer. Workplace stress is on the rise and it's costing
corporate America a fortune. Some estimate that
80% of health care costs are stress related, and
these expenses go right to the bottom line. DISCLAIMER

In other words, if you found a cancerous lump on your skin, you might have to wait months to be seen if your over 60. Or, if you are already deemed high risk, like an aids patient, you may be put on a long waiting list.
Like any many other countries with Universal Care, you really have no say in the doctor you might be assigned either. Is it worth it to you?
Universal health care is a good idea on the surface, but the real issue is high demand and limited resources. I'm really not sure I like the idea the more I look at the practical implications. Besides, if you have an emergency, any ER is by law required to attend to you -- the illegal immigrants are very familiar with this. So what will universal health care really solve? What problems will it introduce? Are they worth it to you?
I bet people will still go to the ER, because they will be unwilling to wait on a waiting list.
- I dont like or want it. Ask Canida what they think of it.
- There will always be "upper level," insurance policies and health benefits for more expensive private doctors. Universal Healthcare is for those who can't afford current healthcare or not provided it through their work. In my opinion, I would wait 30 days for my cancer to be checked out than have it never checked out.
- Traditional Health Care Versus Alternative Health? Traditional Health Care Versus Alternative Health?
hey guys i have a assignment discussing the Advantages and disadvantages of traditional health care and alternative health care which one is better and why? Please Help me
- Traditional health care is good at determining what the problem is and treating it. There may be side effects to the treatments that some do not like. Traditional health care seems to focus on the body part that is sore/not working.
Alternative health care is good at finding treatments for diagnosed conditions that have less side effects. Alternative health care tends to see the person as a whole and treatment involves the whole person. (A person with a job that involves moving around in a chair a lot can get sore knees under the right conditions. Getting a chair and mat that eases that is the correct treatment. Symptomatic treatment is ultrasound and bracing.)
The down side is that the treatment is much less effective. (Cholesterol treatments and prostate treatments are not as potent as the drug form for the same problem.)
Another down side is the wing nuts that are involved in it. I know people who are told that all is well when you have a BP of 200/120 and TIA symptoms. If you showed up at a traditional doctors office, you would be at the hospital so fast your head would spin. The wing nuts also tend to miss serious organic problems like cancer and treat the symptoms of the cancer rather than the cause.
- Traditional health care tends to treat the problem or symptom...not the cause. For example, if you are vomiting, you typically get prescribed something for the vomiting...not what is causing it. Maybe you are stressed and it is affecting your digestive system. The vomiting medication is treating the symptom...not the cause.
Traditional doctors are quick to prescribe a pill, but not so quick to provide lifestyle advice. Of course, that is also the fault of the patient. Westerners have come to expect a pill to cure everything. We almost feel cheated if we don't walk out of the doctor's office without at least one or two prescriptions.
Of course, when it comes to trauma or other types of major surgery, traditional medicine is the best.
Many alternative therapies take a more "whole person" approach. They look at different aspects of your life that affect your health and make changes at that level.
One plus for traditional health care is that interventions have been intensively studied and refined. Unfortunately, traditional physicians are given very little training in alternative therapies and what is worse, they can even be sanctioned for recommending alternative therapies.
A big negative is that traditional health care has become way too influenced by pharmacies. Another big negative is managed care. It breaks down health care into numbers. For instance, there are specific number of days you are supposed to be in the hospital for each ailment. Patient care has become very dehumanized.
The problem with discussing alternative therapies is that there are so many that fall under that general category. Some are very effective and some are sham. Therefore, you have to evaluate each one separately. Because research on these therapies is limited, you often have to go with your gut, so to speak.
