Managing and relieving back pain is not a simple process. The experience of pain is subjective; it cannot be measured from the outside. Health providers who treat back pain find it challenging to obtain the objective or measurable signs that verify and diagnose a patient's painful back symptoms.

As we find ourselves as "mental health providers" in a state of disenchantment, how can we utilize what we know about human potential to offset our own emotional and spiritual malaise? We know from the study of human potential that optimism and hope are extremely important factors in staying well both physically and emotionally. How can we hold on to these capacities within ourselves? How can we at the same time fight Managed Care? In my book, THE ENCHANTED SELF, A Positive Therapy, I discuss how important our own histories are. Each of us has accumulated many memories. Our memory banks are unique to ourselves and hold within them, the potential for hope and optimism. Let me explain.

There are many types of mental health providers to choose from. The most important thing is to select a licensed professional who has the appropriate training and qualifications to help a person with your specific issues. You should also choose someone with whom you can feel comfortable enough to speak freely and openly.

They are various techniques and ways of stress management. Counseling is the most common. Medical and psychological health providers often rely on medications as well. There are also various natural and holistic approaches that confront the stress symptoms quite well. Quick management is important and yields big benefits. Don't sit around second guessing but take a positive action today. You'll be glad you did.

Before CPT Codes existed and when ICD-9-CM codes were just being developed, doctors had to write out in words what symptoms a patient had, what the diagnosis most likely was, and what visits, services, and procedures they thought they should get paid for. Then in 1966 Current Procedural Terminology or CPT was designed by the American Medical Association to assist doctors in billing Medicare and health providers using codes. Doctors use the CPT Codes to specify to health care providers the service rendered so that they can get paid. Currently with 8,568 codes and descriptors available with the CPT 2005 Codes, it is easy to see why these codes can sometimes drive doctors crazy with regard to knowing which ones to use and for what. However, the general idea behind the codes was to help doctors and create a standard as to what Medicare and health providers will pay for.

  • do you think health care providers are in danger of getting lung...   when providing care to heavy smoker clients.
    • Lung cancer has many 'causes' other than tobacco smoke. Don't be naive.
    • it is the second hand smoke that is a concern, not the smell of a smoker.....HOWEVER almost half of lung cancer patients are/were NON-SMOKERS!!!

    • What medications are you on? Some medicines cause leukopenia and so do virus infections and some for no apparent cause. What was the differential. If you had a good percentage of polymorphonuclear leukocytes that is better than a high percentage of lymphocytes.
    • Your WBC is slightly lowered but nothing to be alarmed about. The normal range is between 4.0-10.5. I highly doubt your low WBC count has anything to do with your epilepsy. Although these are extreme examples here are a few reasons for low WBC count: Low white counts can be a sign of bone marrow diseases or an enlarged spleen. Low WBC is also found in HIV infection in some cases. A decreased WBC value is called leukopenia and may indicate a disorder of white cell production (e.g., aplastic anemia, pernicious anemia), viral infections, malaria, alcoholism, or uncontrolled diabetes. Decreased values may also be due to certain drugs including several antibiotics. Special Consideration: The WBC may vary as much as 2000 per cubic millimeter from day to day as a result of exercise, stress, smoking, digestion or minor infection. Often included in a WBC test is the differential of the white blood cells into five or six types, each of which plays a somewhat different role in the body?s immune response and thus helps in pinpointing a diagnosis. When your doctor ran the test did she not explain the results? If they weren't concerned don't worry about it.
